Check Out Sharon Carothers' and Maryann Kwakwa's Latest Op-Ed in the Reno Gazette Journal

Sensis's Sharon Carothers, managing director of SensisHealth, and Maryann Kwakwa, Ph.D., a challenge strategist with Sensis, published an op-ed in the Reno Gazette Journal about how Nevada's proposed Innovation Zones (IZ) could benefit from innovation prize challenges.

 

Earlier this year, Nevada’s Governor Steve Sisolak announced plans to create IZ in certain parts of the state. The primary purpose of these zones would be to spur economic growth through the development of innovative technologies.  The idea was met with substantial opposition because technology companies would be granted free rein to structure communities. And though Innovation Zones might enable tech companies to collaborate at an optimal level, new partnerships do not automatically result in innovative ideas. Prize challenges may be one way to ensure that Nevada’s IZ are at the forefront of innovation long after their novelty has worn off. Prize challenges, which the federal government has been using for over a decade, is a way to help democratize innovation, reach cutting-edge solvers from niche communities, and draw talent from around the world.
